You were a Rental store furniture cleaner?? I missed that one altogether. My gosh... isn't that a bit like being a rust repairer or something?
This was before I could drive, when my mom was working for one of Crawford's little rental offshoots. It was in a shopping center about a block away from Larry's, actually. (Can't remember the name of that street anymore.) While I helped take the furniture on and off the truck, it was mainly my job to clean the refrigerators, washing machines, etc. Most of the time that wasn't too bad, pretty much like wiping off your washing machine at home, but once in a while we'd get a refrigerator that was just...beyond disgusting. All sorts of unidentifiable foods slopped everywhere...and the stench...gods...
I tend to think of my working life starting with Waldenbooks when I was 16, but I put in a good 6 months or so at Custom Rentals. I was just working my way up to going on repo trips (oh joy) when I had to quit to go on summer vacation.
